Where the Numbers Come From
Mechanic wages come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. The state adjustment uses BEA Regional Price Parities. Recall and complaint data on the research pages come from NHTSA. Shop labor rates and parts prices have no government source, so they are market estimates and are labeled that way on each page. Every page lists its sources at the bottom. The methodology page explains each source and how the estimates are built.
Limitations
These are estimates. National averages don't capture your exact vehicle, your shop's labor rate, or what a technician finds once the car is on the lift. Use the estimate to check a quote, then get a written quote from a local shop before you authorize work. Nothing on this site is professional mechanical or financial advice.
