This page is for owners who have a hard or sinking brake pedal and want to know what the repair will cost on their car. It draws on 1,180 NHTSA owner complaints about brake boosters. The Ford F-150 alone has 178 of them, and 46% of the complaints that gave a mileage came between 50,000 and 100,000 miles.
A brake booster replacement costs $330 to $710 on a midsize car at a $120/hr shop, with 1.5 to 3.0 hours of labor. Vehicle size and booster type drive the spread: SUVs and trucks run $430 to $860, and the pricier booster types reach $1,130.
Owners' real bills ran higher. The 54 NHTSA complainants who reported a price paid a median of $1,100, and a quarter of them paid $2,400 or more, usually because the job grew beyond the booster alone.
What owners reported to NHTSA about the brake booster
“Told me I would have to replace brake booster which was causing problems for $425.”
“Replaced brake master cyclinder, brake booster and brake vacuum pump assembly for $1000.76 vehicle had 59,663 miles at the time of service.”
“Dealer diagnose bad vacuum pump and oil in brake booster and lines ,all needed to be replaced costing over $1,300 dollars.”
Owners also checked on the NHTSA form: 69 crashes, 2 fires and 21injuries. A report does not always say the brake booster caused it.

Odometer spread across 502 brake booster complaints
Median odometer by model year: 2015: 54,000 mi (203 reports) · 2016: 52,500 mi (138 reports) · 2017: 54,000 mi (62 reports) · 2018: 43,000 mi (44 reports) · 2019: 48,486 mi (24 reports) · 2020: 53,000 mi (12 reports). Newer model years have had less time to rack up miles, so their medians run lower.
This is the mileage owners reported when they filed, not a failure probability.
What broke, and what happened next, in brake booster complaints
What happened after it failed (number of complaints):
When brake booster failures were reported, year by year, with recall dates
Complaints by the year the failure happened. The current year is partial. A recall in the same year is shown for context, not as a cause.
What this page's numbers are based on, and what they leave out
- 1,180 NHTSA owner complaints naming the brake booster (2015–2025 models), including 54 in which owners stated an amount paid or quoted (middle half $700–$2,400, full range $250–$5,447).
- 20 NHTSA recall campaigns and 62 manufacturer service bulletins that mention this part.
- The calculator's estimate: typical labor hours and parts ranges for this job, adjusted by state using government wage and price-level data.
- 610 complaints mention a dealer and 91 an independent shop.
- Not included: a quote for your exact vehicle, diagnostic fees, taxes, dealer markup, or secondary damage (for example engine damage after overheating). Owner-reported amounts often include those extras, which is why they run higher than the calculator.
More of what owners told NHTSA
“Now I am left with a $1000+ bill that could have been avoided if gm would notify customers of faulty brake booster.”
“My brake boosters went out and I paid $700 now something odd is happening to my brakes with the air or pressure.”
“I took it to a Toyota dealership and they diagnosed a faulty brake booster pump with a price of $2500 to replace.”
“They diagnosed the issue and informed me of the below needed repair⦠Brake - Hydraulic Brake Booster Pump: BRAKE BOOSTER NO HOLDING VACUUM $1,274.73 I am aware that there were some recalls associated with this for my year model that did not involve my VIN.”
“we thought we had all the problems behind us after getting the brake booster replaced ($500).”

Brake master cylinder leaks show up in 299 brake booster complaints
The brake master cylinder is named in 299 brake booster complaints. It is linked to the booster far more strongly than any other part: 92 times more often than chance would predict. If a shop finds fluid in your booster, the master cylinder has to be replaced along with it. On these Fords, a VIN check can decide whether you pay for the repair at all.
Owners of 19% of complaints described a fluid leak. That is one of the few symptoms you can check yourself before you approve a quote for a booster alone.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 brake booster bills often include the vacuum pump
Silverado 1500 owners reported a median of $1,100, above the calculator's $430–$860 for an SUV or truck. One 2015 Silverado owner told NHTSA the "dealer diagnose bad vacuum pump and oil in brake booster and lines, all needed to be replaced costing over $1,300 dollars." Oil in the booster points to a failing vacuum pump. When the pump is the source, the pump and lines go on the same bill, and a booster-only estimate will be too low.
Hydraulic brake booster pumps drive the top quarter of owner bills to $2,400 and above
The top quarter of owner-reported amounts starts at $2,400, and some reach $5,447. Those amounts are well above the calculator's $510–$1,130 for a hydraulic or electric booster. A 2019 Toyota Camry owner reported a quote of $1,274.73 for a "hydraulic brake booster pump" with the note "brake booster no holding vacuum". Lexus bulletin 24LE03 says the brake booster and booster pump assembly on hybrid models, including the GS, LS and NX hybrids, fall under the 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle warranty. If a hybrid is inside that window, the bill may not be yours to pay.
Honda, Kia and Hyundai brake booster recalls cover models outside the complaint leaders
- 23V458000: the tie rod fastener connecting the brake booster and master cylinder on 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport and 2021-2022 Pilot may separate. The result can be a loss of brake function.
- 23V410000: the booster diaphragm on 2023 Kia Sportage models can misalign and cause an internal vacuum leak and a loss of power assist.
- 17V063000: the booster on 2017 Hyundai Elantra models may fail and cause a loss of power brake assist.
On any of these models, a hard pedal or a leaking booster is the failure the recall describes. Check the VIN before paying for a booster.
Volkswagen Atlas and GMC Terrain brake booster complaints sit at opposite mileage extremes
Volkswagen Atlas owners filed 38 complaints at a median of 19,139 miles, so on that model the failures come early, often while the car is still under factory coverage. GMC Terrain complaints have a median of 101,700 miles, near the point where only a tenth of all brake booster reports fall. Across all models, half of reports fall between 39,000 and 72,000 miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
My F-150 has brake fluid inside the vacuum booster. Do I pay for the booster, the master cylinder, or both?
Usually both, because the leaking master cylinder is what put the fluid there. An F-150 owner reported paying $1000.76 for a master cylinder, brake booster and vacuum pump assembly.
Is a Toyota hybrid brake booster pump covered after the regular warranty?
Lexus bulletin 24LE03 states that the brake booster and booster pump assembly on hybrids such as the GS, LS and NX hybrids are covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Owners outside that window reported quotes such as $2,500 on a Highlander.
Can a hissing noise and a hard pedal on a Kia Sportage be the booster recall?
Yes, if the vehicle is a 2023 Sportage. Recall 23V410000 describes a misaligned booster diaphragm that causes an internal vacuum leak and a loss of power brake assist.
