How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $260 to $550; 3 of 4 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($352)MiddleHigher-cost states ($448)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $448 and AR the lowest at $352, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 50,000 (88%), against 60% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is under 3 years old (68%), against 40% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
54 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 54 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2015 is the largest at 15 (28%), followed by 2016 at 6 (11%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 1 (2%).
What do state inspectors fail cars for?
Among 8,738,476 initial safety inspections in North Carolina in 2017, brake components caused 1.9 failed items per 1,000 inspections, the fewest of the four components the state reports.
What it shows: Tires is the largest at 8.5, followed by Lights at 5.2; the smallest shown is Brake components at 1.9.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new brake systems rose 36.2% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
Prices of new brake systems, as shops buy them from makers, since December 2019, against consumer prices for motor vehicle repair. New brake systems: +36.2%; All motor vehicle parts: +17.4%; Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together: +55.2%.
Has this part been recalled abroad on cars that may share it?
Manufacturers filed 1 foreign recall campaigns that name brake shoes with NHTSA since 2015 (matched by the filing text); the latest, from Toyota Motor Corporation in 2019-09.
| Filed | Manufacturer | Foreign recall no. | What the filing says |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019-09 | Toyota Motor Corporation | 189 | If this were to occur, the differential oil may leak between the oil seal and the retainer into the rear brake drum assembly. |

How much traffic do New York state roads carry in each county?
New York State DOT's 2019 traffic counts average 12,562 vehicles a day per station in Bronx County, 12,095 in New York and 12,074 in Queens, against 2,542 in the median county; this is one state, not a national figure.

How many miles does a car of my age really drive in a year?
In the 2022 National Household Travel Survey, US vehicles aged 10-14 years are driven an average 15,415 miles a year against 12,170 for vehicles aged 0-2 years, so 50,000 miles of brake wear comes up in about 3.2 years at the faster pace and 4.1 years at the slower one (reported mileage, survey-weighted).
What it shows: 10-14 is the largest at 15,415, followed by 0-2 at 12,170; the smallest shown is 0-2 at 12,170.
How often does this part fail a real inspection, by car age?
In 181,256 New Jersey initial inspections in 2025 of vehicles sent through the safety lane, 6.4% of cars aged 16+ years failed the brake test against 0.5% of cars under 3 years, about 13 times as often (record counts, not a sample).
What it shows: 16+ is the largest at 6.4%, followed by <3 at 0.5%; the smallest shown is <3 at 0.5%.
Check your car
Plan on $260–$550 for brake shoes replacement, the calculator's default range for a midsize car at a typical shop. Vehicle size, part grade and the shop's hourly rate are what move it.
Run the calculator above with your car and shop type before you say yes to a number.
What does the brake shoes replacement price include?
Shoes are the friction pads inside a drum brake, usually on the rear wheels. The calculator's range covers shoes, labor and the small hardware kit (springs and clips) for the job you pick. It does not cover drums, wheel cylinders or a parking brake cable unless the quote lists them.
That is why two quotes for "brake shoes" can differ by a lot. One is shoes alone, another quietly includes drums and cylinders. Ask which one you are looking at, and ask the shop to put each part on its own line.
How much do your car, parts and shop change it?
Each row below changes one setting and keeps the others at the default, so you can see which lever matters for you.
| Setting | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Economy car (Civic, Corolla, Focus) | $244–$500 |
| SUV or truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) | $284–$625 |
| Luxury or performance car | $316–$725 |
| Budget aftermarket shoes | $236–$475 |
| OEM or dealer original shoes | $300–$675 |
| Independent shop, about $100 an hour | $230–$500 |
| Dealership, about $175 an hour | $343–$688 |
The shop's hourly rate is the lever you control. The shoes themselves matter less: budget and OEM shoes sit in overlapping ranges, while the dealership range sits higher than the independent shop's at both ends. If a dealer quote is your only one, get a second.
Should you replace the drums with the shoes?
Often the drums should at least be measured. RepairPal's guidance is that drums should be machined or replaced whenever new shoes go on, and the reverse, because mismatched parts give "unpredictable braking performance, lack of stopping power, and brake noise." It also recommends doing both sides at once so braking stays even.
So a quote for one wheel is a red flag. Ask for both sides, and ask for the measured drum diameter against the stamped limit. A drum that is within limits can stay. One that is grooved or over the limit should go, and the shop should show you.
How do you know it is the shoes, and how urgent is it?
Squealing or scraping from the rear, a parking brake that feels loose, or a pedal that travels farther than it used to all point at worn shoes. A squeal alone usually gives you some time.
Grinding is different. Metal on metal means the lining is gone and the drum is being cut, which raises the bill with every drive. A long, soft pedal or a car that pulls to one side is a reason to stop driving and get it looked at the same day.
How do you get a fair quote?
Ask four things:
- Are the shoes only, or are drums, wheel cylinders and hardware on the ticket?
- What is the measured lining thickness and drum diameter, and can I see them?
- Is the price for both sides of the axle?
- Is the parking brake adjustment included?
Then ask for the old parts back. Compare the answer to the table above, using the row that matches your car, parts and shop type.
What should you do next?
Use the calculator with your year, make and model, pick the shop type you will use, and get one second quote. At the shop, ask for both sides, the drum measurement and the old parts back.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace brake shoes?
Our calculator gives $260–$550 for a midsize car at a typical shop. An independent shop lands at $230–$500 and a dealership at $343–$688. Those are estimates, not a quote.
Do you replace drums when you replace brake shoes?
Not always, but they must be checked. Drums within limits can stay. Grooved or oversize drums should be machined or replaced, and the shop should show you the measurement.
Can you drive with worn brake shoes?
Squealing gives you a short window. Grinding or a long, soft pedal does not. Stop driving until someone inspects it.

What is our own estimate
The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Checked against 4 established price guides on 2026-10-03: our default's midpoint is 14% above the middle of RepairPal's range ($314–$397). Methodology
