How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $688 to $1,252; 2 of 2 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($843)MiddleHigher-cost states ($1,074)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $1,074 and AR the lowest at $843, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
2,394 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
Which trouble codes do owners report?
P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off leads at 17.
Trouble codes owners quote in complaints about this part. P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off: 17; P2757 Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Performance or Stuck Off: 7.
The code owners quote most is P0741. Read your own code from a scan and give the shop the exact code, not only "the light is on".
What do owners say it led to?
Among the 2,394 owner complaints naming this part, owners most often say loss of power followed.
What owners say happened after the problem. Loss of power: 57 (2%); Stalled while driving: 13 (1%).
If your car shows the signs above, get it checked before it gets as far as loss of power.
What did owners say they paid?
Half of the 44 owners who wrote a dollar amount gave $3,700 or less; one in ten wrote more than $6,959.
These are bills owners wrote down, often covering more than this one repair. They show how far a job can run; get written quotes for your own car.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
5-24 mph leads at 30%.
Owners reported it most often in parking lots and slow traffic. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 2,394 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 144, followed by Crash reported at 25; the smallest shown is Injury reported at 11.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 2,394 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2016 is the largest at 530 (22%); the smallest shown is 2025 at 15 (1%).
Do clutch replacement problems track spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident across states?
Across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about clutch replacement run higher where spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident causes this repair.
How to read it: Each dot is a state. Further right means more spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident (dollars); higher up means more complaints for this repair than expected (1.0 is average). If the dots climb to the right, reports of this repair rise with spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident (dollars).
What it shows: States with more spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident (dollars) tend to sit higher on the chart across 42 states: a pattern in the data, not proof of cause.
- The 10 states with the most spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident (New Hampshire, Colorado, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, California, Utah, Maryland, Washington): reports of this repair run 14% above what the makes sold there would predict, and 8 of 10 are above expected. The 10 with the least (West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, New York, Ohio): 10% below, and 3 of 10 are above expected.
- Exceptions: Nebraska and Minnesota are among the highest in spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident but report below expected.
- Split the states into thirds: the third with the least spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident runs 6% below what the makes sold there would predict, the middle third 1% below, and the third with the most 16% above. Most of the spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident effect sits in the third with the most.
- For spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident, after allowing for the 1562 comparisons we ran, luck alone would produce a pattern this strong about 1 time in 50. Take out any single state and the spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident pattern still holds.
- For spending on vehicle maintenance and repair per resident, of the 5 exception states, 1 read the same way for the other parts of the system (so that is the system there, not this repair) and 4 are specific to this repair.
Residents who spend more on vehicle repair are fixing more or paying more per fix, which changes how many repair problems are reported.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new transmission and power train parts rose 13.5% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
Prices of new transmission and power train parts, as shops buy them from makers, since December 2019, against consumer prices for motor vehicle repair. New transmission and power train parts: +13.5%; All motor vehicle parts: +17.4%; Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together: +55.2%.
How much of a repair bill is labor and how much is parts?
In the 2017 Economic Census, transmission repair shops took 49.8% of their repair revenue from labor charges and 50.2% from parts installed, close to the 51.0% labor share of all auto repair shops (U.S. Census Bureau, national, 4,365 shops).
| Shop type (NAICS) | Labor charges | Parts installed | All revenue of the shop type | Establishments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive repair and maintenance (all shop types) | 51.0% | 49.0% | $115.3 billion | 162,185 |

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns for parts matched to a clutch replacement since model year 2015, covering about 192,590 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
The truck now needs a $9000 transmission replacement to replace the drum and clutches that were destroyed.
Turns out it was the compressor that was the issue and not covered under warranty, Honda wants $1242 to repair the clutch, field and pulley assembly.
RDM clutches are failing internally Rear Drive Module must be replaced at a total cost of around $4000 dollars.
They told me it would be $1100 to just look at my Jeep and diagnose it, after confirming it was the clutch that is the problem.
Check your car
The calculator's default estimate is $688–$1,252, for a front-wheel-drive clutch kit at a $120/hr shop rate. Rear or all-wheel drive, a flywheel that has to be replaced, and the shop you choose move it most.
What does the clutch price cover, and what does it leave out?
The estimate covers a clutch kit plus the labor to take the transmission out and put it back. It does not cover a flywheel unless you choose that setting, and it does not cover a leaking seal or hydraulic part found once the transmission is out, a tow, a rental car or local taxes. Those show up on the final bill, not the estimate.
Ask the shop to list what is in the kit. A kit with a new disc and pressure plate but no release bearing means paying for the same labor twice later.
How do the calculator's ranges change by setting?
The calculator prices the drive layout, the flywheel and the shop. Here is how the ranges move from the default:
| Setting | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Front-wheel drive kit (default, $120/hr) | $688–$1,252 |
| Rear or all-wheel drive kit | $962–$1,728 |
| Front-wheel drive kit and new flywheel | $889–$1,621 |
| Independent shop (~$100/hr) | $620–$1,160 |
| Dealership (~$175/hr) | $875–$1,505 |
Rear and all-wheel-drive cars cost more because more of the drivetrain has to come apart. A flywheel is worth replacing when it is cracked or worn, and the shop should show you why. A flywheel that is only glazed is sometimes resurfaced instead; ask which one your quote assumes.
How do I tell it is the clutch, and how urgent is it?
A pedal that sticks to the floor or does not return, a clutch that grabs at the very top of the pedal, and an engine that revs while the car barely speeds up all point to the clutch. So does a burning smell after a hill or a stop-and-go commute. A shop should confirm it before replacing anything, because a failed hydraulic cylinder can feel the same and costs far less.
If the car will not shift into gear or will not go, stop driving it and have it towed. If it slips but moves, limit your driving to the trip to the shop. A slipping clutch can wear into the flywheel, which turns a kit into a kit and a flywheel.
How do I get a fair quote?
Get two written quotes for the same job. Say whether you want a standard kit or an upgraded one, and whether the flywheel is included. Then compare them with the estimate for your drive layout and shop type.
- Ask for the parts list: disc, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing.
- Ask whether the hydraulic cylinders and clutch fluid are included.
- Ask what happens to the price if the flywheel needs replacing once the transmission is out.
- Ask whether the work carries a warranty on parts and labor, and for how long.
- Ask for the old parts back.
Compare your quote with the price range on the chart above, which lists what established guides publish. If a quote sits well outside every one of them, ask the shop what is in it.
What does the estimate leave out?
It does not know your car's condition, local labor rates beyond the three shop rates shown, or what a technician finds with the transmission on the bench. On an older car, compare the quote with what the car is worth before you decide. Treat the estimate as a range to check a quote against, not a price a shop must honor.
Frequently asked questions
Is the flywheel included in the clutch price?
Not in the default estimate. Choose the flywheel setting in the calculator to see the higher range, and ask your shop whether its quote includes one.
Does the shop's hourly rate matter?
Yes. The same kit is estimated lower at an independent shop than at a dealership, because labor is a large share of the job.
Can I replace only the clutch disc?
Shops usually replace the disc, pressure plate and release bearing together, because the transmission has to come out either way. Ask the shop why if a quote leaves any of them out.
