Grinding Noise Brakes Cost Calculator

The median grinding complaint came in at 17,000 miles, which puts many of these reports inside the period when original pads should still be thick. Owners describe it on nearly new cars: a 2018 Toyota Corolla owner told NHTSA of "grinding noise when braking and reversing in car under 25 miles on odometer," (NHTSA complaint #11129286) and a 2021 Chevrolet Blazer owner wrote, "Vehicle only has 700 miles and there is a loud brake grinding noise when slowly down at speeds of around 40 MPH." (NHTSA complaint #11422910)

If your car is at low mileage and grinding, worn-out pads are the less likely explanation in these reports. Check whether a service bulletin applies to your car and whether it is still under factory coverage before you approve a paid pads-and-rotors job.

One 2024 Atlas owner told NHTSA: "Brakes grind and vibrate and have for the past 7,000 miles, dealer continues to say this is normal for Volkswagen, this problem has been reported numerous times to VW and doing an internet search I am not the only one with this problem." (NHTSA complaint #11627755)

That fits the wider pattern: 15% of all grinding complaints say the dealer could not fix it or had to repeat the repair. For an Atlas owner, a written record of each dealer visit matters more than one quote. No Atlas owners reported what they paid, so the data has no Atlas figure to compare with the calculator.

Brake rotors are the one other part that shows up consistently in these complaints: 10 of them, 21%. Rotors appear 41.2 times more often in grinding complaints than in the complaint files overall. A shop that says the rotors are scored is describing what owners most often report alongside grinding.

When the shop says the rotors are scored, price the brake rotor replacement: the brake rotor is named in 21% (10) of the 47 grinding noise brakes complaints.

Among complaints that gave a speed, 52% put the grinding at 5-24 mph and the median speed was 15 mph. Only 13% happened at 55 mph or faster. So owners mostly notice it in slow, stop-and-go braking, not during hard highway stops. That matches GM bulletin 21-NA-142's description of grinding after sitting overnight and the Corolla owner's grinding while reversing.

No owner in these complaints needed a tow, and none reported a crash, fire, injury or death. Every report mentions noise. Few mention anything else: 9% mention a warning light.

Honda issued a service bulletin for the 2015 Odyssey covering front brakes that "grind, rub or screeches." The bulletin says an improperly machined front brake caliper bracket may contact the front brake disc. On that van, grinding can come from the bracket and not from pad wear. And contact with the disc is exactly the damage that leads to a rotor bill.

2015 is also one of the worst model years in the complaint data, with 6 complaints, tied with 2020 and behind only 2021's 8. Odyssey owners should have the shop check the bracket against the bulletin before paying for pads and rotors.

Owners who named a shop named a dealer 16 times and an independent shop once. Once a car is out of coverage and the dealer has already called the grinding normal, an independent shop is where the lower range applies.
