Oil Change Cost Calculator

The Kia Soul stands out among the most-complained-about models. Owners who stated a dollar amount reported a median of $5,000. That is engine-repair money, not oil-change money. The calculator's most expensive setting, high-mileage synthetic, tops out at $185.

Treat the gap as a warning sign, not a pricing error. When an owner reports thousands of dollars in a complaint that mentions an oil change, the oil change is usually where the problem was found or where the owner thinks it started. If you drive one of these models, keep receipts showing the date and mileage of every oil change. A disputed engine claim often comes down to that paperwork.

Across all oil-change complaints that included a dollar figure, the middle half of amounts ran from $350 to $6,000. None of that describes an oil change alone. The low end matches added work found during a routine visit. One Buick Enclave owner said, "Then in July 2020 during a routine oil change I had to pay $222.14 additional work."

The high end matches major discoveries.

When owners named the price of just the oil change, their numbers fit the calculator's range. A Honda CR-V owner said, "By the way an oil change is going to be $60+ each time because of synthetic oil." A Jeep Wrangler owner reported being charged $46.00. Both are below the calculator's default full synthetic estimate of $125–$170, which includes a filter and 30 minutes of labor. A quote in that range is normal for a shop visit. A quote far above it almost always means more work was added.

No recall covers oil changes in this data, but manufacturers have issued service bulletins that affect when you get one:

• Alfa Romeo 01-001-26: on Giulia and Stelvio models, the oil change light can come on shortly after delivery.

It does not mean every vehicle has the condition. If your model is listed, mention the bulletin number at the dealer before you pay for an early change or a diagnosis.

Dealers came up in 5,206 of these complaints. Independent shops came up in 637. That mostly reflects where owners take newer cars for warranty-tracked service and where engine disputes get decided. It is not a measure of which shop does better work. The calculator reflects the price difference: moving from the default shop type to a higher-priced one raises full synthetic from $125–$170 to $153–$198.

Counted by the year the problem happened rather than the model year, complaints rose almost every year and peaked in 2025 at 1,485. Most complaints still involve 2015–2018 models, so the rise means those cars are now reaching the mileage where oil-related engine problems show up. It does not mean newer cars are worse. If you own one of those model years, your oil change history matters more now than it did when the car was new.

A warning light was the symptom owners described most often. About a quarter reported stalling or losing power. Engine damage was mentioned in 1,182 complaints. Fire was mentioned in 123 safety reports and crashes in 103. A report does not prove that the oil change or the oil caused the event. Still, an oil pressure or check-engine light soon after a service is a reason to stop and check the oil level and filter right away, not after your next trip.
