The Ford Escape leads with 465 complaints. The Edge and Fusion come next, so three Ford models top the list. What owners reported paying does not follow the same order. Edge owners reported a median of $414, which fits a plug-and-labor job. Escape owners reported a median of $1,666. That is several times the calculator's default range, which points to repairs beyond the plugs themselves.

A Ford Escape owner told NHTSA the mechanic diagnosed "a cylinder 3 misfire and recommended the spark plugs be changed $700.00, 3 days later the light came back on again." If your Escape quote is far above the calculator, ask which line items are not plugs, coils or labor.

Honda Accord owners reported a median of $2,000, and so did CR-V owners. The Accord's complaint peak is on 2018-2020 models. Even the calculator's highest dealer-rate run for 5 iridium plugs tops out at $373. A gap that large means the owner figures cover more than a plug change. On these Hondas, a quote near the calculator range is likely a plug job alone. A quote near $2,000 is a different repair, and you should ask the shop to name it.

Coolant or fluid leaks show up in about one in four spark plug complaints. The head gasket is named in 283 of them. Engine damage is recorded in 431 reports. When plugs keep fouling, new plugs may not stop the misfire. A 2016 Jeep Compass owner wrote: "Spark plugs replaced $300 later no jumping but car is still stalling!!!!!!!" Dealers or shops could not fix the problem, or had to repeat the repair, in 25% of reports. If the misfire comes back soon after new plugs, have the shop look for the cause before you pay for another set.

The ignition coil is named in 23% of spark plug complaints, far more often than any other part. Fuel injectors appear in 11%. The coil sits on top of the plug on many engines, so it makes sense to decide about coils while the plugs are already out. That way you avoid paying a second labor charge if a coil fails soon after. A Ford Fusion owner said the shop "said it just needed new spark plugs and injectors cleand, so they did the work and charged me $400."

Jeep bulletin 66D is a customer satisfaction notification. It says the spark plug insulator on approximately 48,000 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles may break due to excessive cylinder pressure. That pattern suggests models from the peak years are now reaching the mileage where owners report problems. Most reports fall between 50,000 and 100,000 miles.

Only 1% of reports describe a parked car. Most drivers were moving, at a median speed of 45 mph. Loss of power appears in 323 reports and stalling while driving in 59. A worn plug that causes a stall at highway speed is more than a maintenance item.
