How the price estimate was built
What it shows: Our default range is $250 to $580; 1 of 2 published ranges overlap it.
What does this cost in your state?
California is the costliest state and Arkansas the cheapest; each square shows that state's midpoint of the estimate.
Lower-cost states ($361)MiddleHigher-cost states ($459)
What it shows: CA is the highest at $459 and AR the lowest at $361, across 51 states.
Counts below are complaints filed with NHTSA, not failure rates: a longer bar means more owners reported it.
Is your car affected?
What it shows: The most common band for complaints about this repair is 3-5 years (48%), against 35% for all complaints: the biggest difference between the two.
Is it urgent, and what do owners notice first?
1,209 owner complaints name this part.
Owners say the dealer could not fix or repeat the problem. If it comes back after a repair, ask what was tested before you pay again.
What do owners say it led to?
Among the 1,209 owner complaints naming this part, owners most often say stalled while driving followed.
What owners say happened after the problem. Stalled while driving: 9 (1%); Engine damage: 7 (1%); Loss of power: 7 (1%).
If your car shows the signs above, get it checked before it gets as far as stalled while driving.
Which other parts do owners name in the same complaint?
Among the 1,209 owner complaints naming this part, car battery is named in 43% of them, more than any other part.
Other parts named in the same complaints. Car battery: 43%; Alternator: 13%.
Owners name the car battery most often in the same complaint, which is not proof that one caused the other. Ask the shop whether it checked the car battery too, so you are not quoted twice for one visit.
How fast were owners driving when it happened?
25-44 mph leads at 30%.
Owners reported it most often at town speeds. Tell the shop what speed it happens at, because that narrows the diagnosis.
How serious did it get for owners?
Among the 1,209 owner complaints naming this part, being towed is the outcome owners report most often.
What it shows: Towed is the largest at 73, followed by Fire reported at 39; the smallest shown is Injury reported at 1.
Which model years show up most in the complaints?
Among the 1,209 owner complaints naming this part that state a model year, complaints cluster in a few model years instead of spreading evenly.
What it shows: 2019 is the largest at 250 (21%), followed by 2015 at 218 (18%); the smallest shown is 2024 at 22 (2%).
Have recalls for this part told owners to stop driving?
Recalls for this part that told owners to stop driving or park outside. Park outside, away from buildings: 3 recall (319,700).
Do starter motor replacement problems track share of workers who drive to work alone across states?
A weak hint, not a firm finding: across U.S. states, NHTSA owner complaints about starter motor replacement run higher where share of workers who drive to work alone is higher, after adjusting for the makes sold in each state. This is an association across states, not proof that share of workers who drive to work alone causes this repair.
Are the parts for this repair getting more expensive, or only the labor?
The federal producer price index for new electrical and electronic equipment rose 23.3% from December 2019 to August 2026, while the consumer price index for motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together, rose 55.2% (BLS, national).
Prices of new electrical and electronic equipment, as shops buy them from makers, since December 2019, against consumer prices for motor vehicle repair. New electrical and electronic equipment: +23.3%; All motor vehicle parts: +17.4%; Motor vehicle repair, labor and parts together: +55.2%.

If this part was recalled, is the repair free?
Federal law (49 U.S.C. 30120) requires a maker to fix a recalled defect without charge for cars first bought within 15 calendar years (tires within 5), and NHTSA lists 23 recall campaigns for parts matched to a starter motor replacement since model year 2015, covering about 1,309,599 vehicles.
| Rule or count | What it says |
|---|---|
| Age limits | The free-remedy duty does not apply to a car first bought more than 15 calendar years, or a tire first bought more than 5 calendar years, before the recall notice. |
| Failure to fix | A repair not done adequately within 60 days of presentation is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time; the maker must then replace the vehicle or refund the purchase price less depreciation. |
| Free remedy | A maker must fix a recall defect without charge. |

What do owners say?
4 complaints quoted word for word, each with its NHTSA number.
$1000 later I had a new starter put in and Ford did some recall work on it.
They charged me over $1,000.00 for a brand new starter, and after they did it started for one day and then it broke down again.

Starter motor replacement cost runs $250–$580 for a midsize car in our calculator, with a new aftermarket starter at a shop charging $120 an hour. Economy cars start at $230. Luxury and performance cars run $420–$1,040. That's our estimate, so treat a quote well above it as a reason to ask what else is on the ticket.
Here's the part that should slow you down before you say yes. Of the 2,197 owners who have told NHTSA about a starter problem, 38% also named the car battery, and 11% named the alternator. A starter that won't crank isn't always a bad starter.
This page covers the price, what moves it, how to tell a starter from a battery, and the safety records worth knowing. Put your own car into the starter motor replacement cost calculator for a range that fits it.
What is the typical starter motor replacement cost?
The typical starter motor replacement cost is $250–$580 for a midsize or standard car, using a new aftermarket starter at $120 an hour. That's the default in our calculator. Every setting you change moves it, as this table shows.
| What you change | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Default: new aftermarket starter, midsize/standard, $120/hr | $250–$580 |
| Economy car (Civic, Corolla, Focus) | $230–$490 |
| SUV or truck (Tahoe, Ram 1500, 4Runner) | $290–$710 |
| Luxury or performance (BMW, Mercedes, Corvette) | $420–$1,040 |
| Remanufactured or rebuilt starter (most common) | $200–$440 |
| OEM or dealer original starter | $360–$840 |
| Independent shop (~$100/hr) | $230–$540 |
| Dealership (~$175/hr) | $305–$690 |
Those are ranges, not quotes. Your car, your zip code and the part your shop picks all move the final number.
Ask the shop to write the quote down with the part grade on it: new aftermarket, remanufactured or OEM. Those are three different prices for the same job.
Why does starter motor replacement cost vary so much between quotes?
Quotes for starter motor replacement vary because published estimates use different scopes, and most don't tell you theirs.
Our estimate sits lower than the first two because it states its scope: a midsize car, an aftermarket part, $120 an hour. Move to a dealer, an OEM part or a luxury car and you land inside their ranges.
Owners sit higher still. The 33 owners who wrote a dollar amount into their NHTSA complaint give a midpoint of $900, with the middle half between $500 and $1,411. One of them, a 2015 Honda Accord owner at 70,000 miles, put it this way (complaint #11246670):
One thing to keep in mind: these are owners' own reports, not lab results, and a complaint naming a starter doesn't prove the starter was the fault. Owners also tend to write in when the bill hurt. Still, the pattern is worth acting on: 26% of the complaints say the dealer couldn't fix it or the repair had to be repeated.
Ask this: "What test showed the starter is the problem?" If the answer is "it won't start," keep reading.
Is it the starter or the battery?
Before you pay for starter motor replacement, know that the car battery is named in 38% (828) of the 2,197 starter complaints, and the alternator in 11% (237). A weak battery can make a healthy starter click, crawl or do nothing.
Manufacturers know this. A service bulletin (9100832, dated June 9, 2026) covering Ram 1500, Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and Dodge Charger models tells technicians: "Before replacing the starter, please follow the published diagnostics in the Service Information." When the maker tells its own techs to diagnose first, you should ask for the same.
Here's the order that saves money:
- Test the battery first. A battery test is far cheaper than a starter.
- Check the charging side. If the battery keeps dying, the alternator may be the cause.
- Ask for a starter draw or voltage-drop test, which shows whether the starter or the wiring is at fault. If it's the wiring, the fix is a battery cable replacement, not a starter.
- Only then agree to the starter.
If the shop can't say which test it ran, a diagnostic is a small price against a $250–$580 part you may not need. Owners described noise in only 9% of the complaints, so don't wait for a grinding sound to take it seriously, and don't assume noise proves the part.
Should you use a dealer, an independent shop or do it yourself?
For a midsize car, an independent shop estimates at $230–$540, and a dealership at $305–$690. The parts are similar. You're paying for the hourly rate, about $100 at an independent and about $175 at a dealer. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook is where technician pay, the labor side of every repair price, comes from.
Owners named a dealer 1,187 times in these complaints and an independent shop 134 times. That says more about who owners take a recall or warranty problem to than about price, so don't read it as advice.
The dealer can be the cheaper route in one case: warranty. A 2017 Chrysler Pacifica owner told NHTSA the dealer's starter estimate was $750, but "because we had purchased the MOPAR extended warranty our cost was $200" (complaint #11418875). Ask about coverage before the work, not after.
DIY: AAA says many starters come out in under an hour, while others sit under the intake manifold. It gives many Toyota and Lexus V8s as an example. A remanufactured starter at $200–$440 installed puts the part in the price, so the DIY saving is the labor. If you try it, disconnect the battery first.
Is a bad starter dangerous?
Usually a bad starter leaves you stuck, not hurt. But the NHTSA records include the serious cases, and the safety facts come first. Owners reported 21 crashes, 69 fires and 13 injuries on the NHTSA form across the 2,197 complaints. Zero deaths.
The speeds matter too. Of the 646 owners who gave a speed, the midpoint is 38 mph, 34% were at 55 mph or faster, and only 2% were parked or under 5 mph. Owners described these results in their complaints:
- Engine damage: 106 complaints
- Loss of power: 91 complaints
- Stalled while driving: 61 complaints
- Lost steering or braking: 13 complaints
Those are owner descriptions, and a stall doesn't prove the starter caused it. Some of these complaints name the starter alongside other parts, which is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters.
Here's how to sort your own situation:
- Stop driving and get it looked at: a burning smell or smoke. Smoke or burning smell shows up in 5% of the complaints, and the fire records are the reason.
- Get it checked this week: slow cranking, a click, or intermittent no-start. You can still drive it, but a car that quits at a stoplight will eventually quit somewhere worse. 7% of owners reported being towed.
- You have time to shop around: a car that's parked, healthy and just needs a price. Get two quotes.
A 2018 Jeep Cherokee owner at 17,000 miles told NHTSA, "IN SEPT OF 2020 MY STARTER BROKE, I PAID $550 to get it fixed" (complaint #11354837). That's inside our high end for a midsize car and a reminder that young cars fail too.
What should you do before you pay for a starter?
Start with the test, not the part. The 2,197 complaints and the manufacturer's own bulletin point the same way: diagnose before you replace.
- This week: check your VIN for recalls, and ask the shop which test showed the starter is bad.
- Before the work: get the part grade in writing and a second quote if you're above $580 on a midsize car.
- After the work: ask for the old starter back, and ask how long the repair is warranted.
Run the calculator again with your car's details, then hold the shop's quote up against it. It's free, and there's no account. A shop worth paying is glad to show its work. To see where our numbers come from, read how we calculate and where the numbers come from.
Frequently asked questions
How much does starter motor replacement cost?
Starter motor replacement costs $250–$580 for a typical midsize car in our calculator, $230–$490 for an economy car and $420–$1,040 for a luxury car. Dealer labor and OEM parts push it higher.
How do I know if it's the starter or the battery?
Get the battery tested first. The battery is named in 38% of owner starter complaints. A weak battery can mimic a bad starter, so only a test tells you for sure. Ask the shop which one it ran.
How long does a starter motor replacement take?
AAA says many starters come out in under an hour. Others sit under the intake manifold, which adds labor. Ask the shop for the labor hours in writing. A quote that shows one hour and charges three is worth a question.
Is it safe to drive with a bad starter?
Not always. A starter that only fails to crank leaves you stranded, but owners reported 69 fires and 61 stalls while driving. Smoke, a burning smell or a starter that keeps grinding after the engine catches means stop driving until someone checks it.
Is a starter motor replacement covered by warranty or a recall?
It can be. 23 recalls and 320 service bulletins name starters, and half the complaints involve cars 4 years old or newer. Check your VIN for recalls and read your warranty before paying. We can't promise coverage for your car.
