Tire Balancing Cost Calculator

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has more tire balancing complaints than any other model, spread across 2015, 2016 and 2018 trucks. Their median mileage is 10,000, so for most of these owners the vibration started while the truck was still new. The Ford F-250 SD is different: its complaints have a median of 51,000 miles. For a heavy-duty Ford, a balance problem is more likely to show up after the tires have been replaced or have worn.

The Jeep Wrangler's complaints peak on 2018, 2021 and 2022 models, with a median of 4,000 miles. A Wrangler owner who is shaking right after delivery matches that pattern. For the Kia EV9, every complaint is on 2024 models.

The driveshaft is named in 22 tire balancing complaints. That is 44.8 times more often than it appears in complaints overall, and it is the strongest link to another part on this page. Several of the most-reported models are pickups (Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, F-250 SD). For those trucks, a vibration that is still there after a road-force balance points to the driveshaft. A driveshaft repair costs more than the $60–$120 the calculator gives for balancing four tires. Tire installation (lift 29.3) is the second most common link. That points to wheels that were mounted or balanced badly when the tires were fitted, not to a worn part.

Owners say the vibration shows up at highway speed. The median speed in these reports is 60 mph, and no reports describe the car parked. A car that feels smooth around town but shakes at highway speed fits this pattern. Only 1% of owners needed a tow, so this is usually a trip to the shop, not a breakdown. Owners reported 2 crashes and no fires or injuries.

Dealers are named in 132 complaints and independent shops in only 3, so most of these repairs were done under warranty or at dealer prices. One in five owners describe going back more than once. A RAM 1500 owner told NHTSA: "I brought to back to the dealer with 380 miles on it, they road forced balanced the wheels, said they were off." A 2016 Ford Transit owner said the fix was simple: "Took it to have the front wheel balance checked and each wheel has +2 oz (06-08-17 1025 miles) the wheel balance fixed the steering wheel vibration problem."

A 2022 Jeep Wrangler owner reported: "I took it to the dealership and they balanced the tires and charged me $120.00." A 2024 Toyota Tacoma owner was charged $75 at 5,000 miles, even though the service manager confirmed the problem. Both bills fall inside the calculator's default range of $60–$120 for four tires. The $120 bill sits at the top of that range. At the calculator's highest shop tier ($120–$200), the same $120 would be the cheapest price. If only the front shakes, as with the Transit owner above, the calculator gives $30–$60 for balancing 2 tires.

No recalls cover tire balancing. There are 16 manufacturer service bulletins. GM bulletin 100310001F gives wheel balancer mounting instructions for the Silverado 2500 (2015–2021), Silverado 1500 (2017, 2018), Sierra 2500 and Sierra Denali. That overlaps with the Silverado 1500 model years that have the most complaints. Volvo bulletin ST-227-2018-08-1 tells retailers to use road-force balancing on XC60, S60cc and V60cc models. Genesis bulletins 20-SS-004H and 20-SS-004HG give vibration procedures for the G70, G80 and G90. Mitsubishi notice TIN-22-31-001REV covers wheel balance concerns found at pre-delivery inspection on 2022 Outlander and Eclipse Cross models. Toyota bulletins SET-TSB-18-001 and SET-TSB-18-002 apply only to Tundra and 4Runner trucks fitted with Southeast Toyota accessory wheels and tires.
