How old is this tire? Read the date code.

Under federal rule 49 CFR 574.5 every tire carries a DOT identification number whose final four digits are its date code, two digits for the week and two for the year it was made, so a code of 3524 means week 35 of 2024 and tire age can be read before you buy.

Our estimate for a standard tread puncture, fixed with the plug-patch method, is $30–$50, with labor and materials included. Two things move it: the shop type, and whether the tire can be repaired at all. If it can't, a single-tire replacement is a different job at a different price.

What does a flat tire repair price cover?

The estimate covers one puncture in the tread, repaired with a plug and patch together, with labor and materials in the number. If the shop finds the damage is not repairable, the job turns into a replacement and the price changes.

Ask: "Is that for one puncture, plug and patch together, with the tire taken off the wheel?"

How much does it cost by repair type and shop?

Every range below comes from the calculator, one setting changed at a time.

What you change Estimate Scope
Independent shop $25–$45 Standard tread puncture, plug-patch, labor and materials
Dealership $50–$75 Standard tread puncture, plug-patch, labor and materials
Full replacement $120–$280 Single tire, parts plus mounting and balancing, tire size affects range

The dealership costs more for the same puncture repair. The replacement range is wide because tire size drives it, so put your own size into the calculator rather than reading the middle of that range.

Before you agree: ask whether the price changes if the tire turns out to be a replacement, and by how much.

Can my tire be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Repair is for a puncture in the tread. Damage in the shoulder or the sidewall is generally not repairable, and neither is a tire that was driven flat for a distance, because the inside can be damaged where you can't see it. A proper repair means the tire comes off the wheel so it can be checked inside and out.

That is why a quote given over the phone is only a guess. If a shop says the tire can't be repaired, ask where the damage is and ask to see it.

How urgent is a flat tire?

Stop driving on it. A tire driven flat can turn a repair into a replacement. A slow leak buys you a little time, and an air top-up only delays the repair.

Your move: if the tire has lost air, book the repair the same day rather than waiting for it to get worse.

How do I get a fair quote?

Match the quote to the table above on two points: the shop type and the job. A repair quote near the dealership range at an independent shop, or a replacement quote when no one has inspected the tire, is the one to question.

Some tire chains advertise free repairs on repairable tires, even tires bought elsewhere. It costs nothing to ask, and a free repair on a tread puncture beats paying the estimate. Ask whether it applies to your tire.

What does the estimate leave out?

The estimate prices the repair or the replacement. It does not include a second damaged tire, a wheel that has been bent, or a sensor that needs resetting after the tire comes off. Ask about each before you approve the work.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to patch a tire or replace it?

Patching is cheaper when the puncture is in the tread. A replacement costs several times a repair in our estimates, and shop type moves both. If the damage is in the sidewall, replacement is the only safe option.

Can I drive on a tire I have plugged myself?

A plug on its own is a temporary fix. A lasting repair uses a plug and patch together, with the tire off the wheel. Have a shop do that before you rely on the tire.

The price range comes from our calculator's formula. Its parts prices, labor hours per job and shop-rate tiers are CalcScrape estimates, not a published price dataset. Not independently checked: no established price guide publishes a general range for this exact job (looked 2026-10-06), so the default has no outside comparison. Methodology
