This page is for owners whose car pulls, wanders or wears tires unevenly and want to know what fixing it should cost. Below the calculator, 2,426 NHTSA owner complaints show which models report alignment trouble, in which model years and at what mileage, and what owners said they paid.
A 4-wheel alignment costs $90 to $180 at a $120/hr shop rate, and a 2-wheel alignment costs $60 to $90. The shop's hourly rate moves the price most: at $175/hr, the same 4-wheel job runs $131 to $263.
Across 2,426 NHTSA owner complaints that mention alignment, the median vehicle had only 24,000 miles. If your truck is that new, report the pull before you pay for an alignment.
2-wheel / front-end at $60-$90 up to 4-wheel / all-wheel at $90-$180
Compares two-wheel and four-wheel alignment pricing for one vehicle, using this calculator's pricing model.
| Alignment type | Cost per vehicle |
|---|---|
| 2-wheel / front-end | $60-$90 |
| 4-wheel / all-wheel | $90-$180 |
What owners reported to NHTSA about the wheel alignment
“I have a tire alignment done on the Jeep at 25k miles for $120.”
“Dealer said I need to replace the entire steering rack & pinion (with alignment) at a cost $2,027.”
“By suggestion, I paid $100 for an alignment.”
Owners also checked on the NHTSA form: 90 crashes, 5 fires and 43injuries. A report does not always say the wheel alignment caused it.

Odometer spread across 800 wheel alignment complaints
Median odometer by model year: 2015: 40,000 mi (179 reports) · 2016: 34,980 mi (142 reports) · 2017: 21,300 mi (160 reports) · 2018: 14,500 mi (131 reports) · 2019: 15,000 mi (91 reports) · 2020: 10,000 mi (33 reports) · 2021: 12,000 mi (19 reports) · 2022: 34,000 mi (14 reports) · 2023: 39,208 mi (13 reports) · 2025: 2,000 mi (10 reports). Newer model years have had less time to rack up miles, so their medians run lower.
This is the mileage owners reported when they filed, not a failure probability.

What happened after it failed (number of complaints):
1 death reported in these complaints. A report does not establish that the wheel alignment caused it.

Complaints by the year the failure happened. The current year is partial. A recall in the same year is shown for context, not as a cause.
What this page's numbers are based on, and what they leave out
- 2,426 NHTSA owner complaints naming the wheel alignment (2015–2025 models), including 137 in which owners stated an amount paid or quoted (middle half $600–$3,500, full range $60–$13,184).
- 3 NHTSA recall campaigns and 0 manufacturer service bulletins that mention this part.
- The calculator's estimate: typical labor hours and parts ranges for this job, adjusted by state using government wage and price-level data.
- 1,366 complaints mention a dealer and 151 an independent shop.
- Not included: a quote for your exact vehicle, diagnostic fees, taxes, dealer markup, or secondary damage (for example engine damage after overheating). Owner-reported amounts often include those extras, which is why they run higher than the calculator.
More of what owners told NHTSA
“Received recall 19v-435 brought it into dana Ford staten island an was told this recall only covers rear allignment and this could effect the front alignment and I would have to pay $89 plus tax.”
“I haven't got a cost for the glass and installation yet but alignment takes 1.5 hours at $172.00 per hour.”
“They ultimately offered 60% of coverage because of the faulty transmissions but now I am dealing with the alignment not working and the car still jerking after paying an additional $1650.”
“Parts and labor with an alignment and diagnostic is $2,106 plus tax.”
“I have to pay $1,600.00 to replace the entire steering system - everything: steering column, computer/electrical, alignment, etc.”

Jeep Wrangler alignment complaints cluster on 2018-2020 models at a median of 5,000 miles
The Jeep Wrangler has the most alignment complaints of any model, 115 in total. Its reports come in far earlier than the page-wide median. The median mileage for a Wrangler report is 5,000 miles, and the peak model years are 2018, 2019 and 2020. The Toyota Tundra shows a similar early pattern: its reports have a median of 3,000 miles, and its peak years are the newest in the dataset (2023 through 2025).
If you own one of these trucks and it is still under its factory coverage, report the pull to the dealer first. Owners of these models are describing trucks that were nearly new.
RAM 2500 and Ford F-250 SD alignment reports arrive later, near 27,000-35,000 miles
Heavy-duty pickups come right after the Wrangler. The RAM 2500 and Ford F-250 SD each have 92 complaints, and both peak on 2016-2018 models. Their median mileages are 35,000 for the RAM and 27,000 for the Ford. The RAM 3500 and F-350 SD follow the same pattern, with median mileage around 30,000.
One F-250 SD owner told NHTSA: "I thought it was tires, so I went out and had $1,600 worth of tires put on it with an alignment, nope." On these trucks, a new alignment did not always fix the handling problem the owner was chasing.
Tie rod and control arm wear shows up with alignment complaints far more than chance
Among the other parts named in alignment complaints, tie rods appear 23.1 times more often than expected, and control arms 14.9 times more often. Shocks or struts and the rack and pinion also appear, at lower lift.
This matters for your bill. A worn tie rod or control arm lets the wheel angles drift again after an alignment. If your shop reports play in either part, the alignment should be done after that repair, not before it. A repair followed by a second alignment explains much of the gap between the calculator's range and what owners reported paying.
Plain alignment bills of $89-$120 match the calculator, while $1,500 median bills included other repairs
When owners reported the alignment by itself, the prices fit the calculator's default range of $90–$180. A 2016 Jeep Cherokee owner wrote: "I have a tire alignment done on the Jeep at 25k miles for $120." A 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan owner wrote: "By suggestion, I paid $100 for an alignment."
The owner-reported median of $1,500 comes from bills that bundled the alignment with other work.
Dealer labor rates move the alignment price on its own. At the calculator's dealer setting, a 4-wheel alignment costs $131–$263 at $175/hr, compared with $75–$150 at $100/hr.
55% of alignment problems were reported at 55 mph or faster
Most alignment complaints describe a problem that showed up at highway speed. The median speed at the time was 55 mph, and only 2% of reports came from a parked car. Only 3% of owners needed a tow, so an alignment problem rarely leaves a car stranded. Its usual consequence is handling at speed: 38 reports describe lost steering or braking, and the full set includes 90 crash reports and 43 injury reports. A report shows what the owner described, not a proven cause.

- Porsche Cayenne, 2021-2022 (22V040000): the rear axle alignment may not have been inspected after the repair for Recall 21V-271. The risk is uneven tire wear.
- Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2025 (25V605000): rear suspension alignment adjustment bolts may have been tightened improperly, which can cause a loss of stability control. The recall covers 8 vehicles.
- Ford F-150, 2015-2018 (21E027000): the aftermarket MOOG K500359 ball joint may be missing its alignment hole.
A 2016 Ford Explorer owner told NHTSA that Recall 19V-435 "only covers rear allignment," and that the front alignment cost $89 plus tax. If your car has had recall work on the suspension, ask which axle the recall covers before you pay for an alignment on the other one.
