Subaru models take up the top of the list. The Outback alone accounts for 2,238 complaints, and the Forester, Crosstrek, Legacy, Impreza and Ascent all appear as well. Most of these owners filed at low mileage.

What owners reported paying is the useful part. Outback owners reported a median of $950, Forester owners $1,000 and Impreza owners $987. Those figures line up with the calculator's run for one ADAS calibration plus aftermarket glass ($470–$940), or sit just above it. They are well above the default $320–$640. A Subaru quote near $1,000 therefore matches what other owners paid. A quote near the default range may not include camera calibration. One Outback owner told NHTSA they "paid about $950 (OEM equipment and due to the EyeSight system calibration required)."

Crosstrek owners reported a lower median of $410. Some of those bills may have been partly paid by insurance. One Crosstrek owner described "paying a $250 deductible on a $1022 bill."

The Explorer stands out from the other top models. Its median complaint mileage is 75,000, while Subaru and Kia models file at low mileage. The peak years are 2015-2017.

If your Explorer's problem is loose or missing trim around the glass, and not a crack, a dealer may fix it for free under that recall. Check the VIN before paying for new glass. Separately, recall 26V117000 covers the wiper motor on 2020-2022 Explorers.

That means many of these cracks were reported while the car was still under the new-vehicle warranty.

Wiper problems are a separate issue from a cracked windshield, so check both on the VIN lookup.

Wiper blades are the part most often named alongside the windshield. When a quote includes new glass, replacing the blades at the same time costs little and keeps worn blades from scratching the new glass.

Many of the recalls in these files are for wiper arms, motors and linkages, not the glass itself. Examples are 22V842000 for the F-150 and 20V208000 for the Ram 1500 and Jeep Compass. If the problem is streaking or wipers that stop working, the fix may be a free recall repair rather than glass.

More than half of the reports with a speed recorded happened at 55 mph or faster. That is consistent with rock strikes and wind stress described in the complaints. Only a small share of owners needed a tow, so a cracked windshield rarely strands the car. The risk is visibility. Owners filed crash-related reports, although a report does not prove the crack caused the crash.

One Toyota Highlander owner described a crack from "minor stones hitting the base of the windshield, requiring replacement- OEM with camera, heat, radar sensors for $1800." A Highlander with those sensors belongs in the calculator's truck/SUV and calibration settings, not the default.

The calculator's large-vehicle run with aftermarket glass tops out at $1,440. Bills above that almost always mean OEM glass plus calibration, and sometimes heated glass or a head-up display.
